Flagship battle rages on: Sony Xperia Z5 Premium vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 5/S6 edge+ vs. LG G4 vs. iPhone 6 Plus

Sony Mobile Communications Inc. on Wednesday unveiled its next-generation Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, alongside “the world’s first 4K smartphone,” the Xperia Z5 Premium.

Along with the 4K display, the Xperia Z5 features Sony’s new 1/2.3 Exmor RS for mobile 23-megapixel sensor and F2.0 G Lens. Sony said this is its first “completely re-imagined” smartphone camera module since Xperia Z1.

Being a flagship offering, the Xperia Z5 Premium has to compete with other flagship offerings available right now. Below we compare the Xperia Z5 Premium to four rivals.

Note: On September 9, Apple is expected to unveil its next-gen iPhones, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The iPhone 6s Plus is said to feature Apple’s A9 chip, 2GB of RAM, an upgraded LTE chip, 12-megapixel rear camera, upgraded FaceTime camera, Force Touch technology and run iOS 9. Naturally, the iPhone 6s Plus will become the new yardstick for phablet-sized flagship smartphones and we’ll have an updated comparison post-launch.

As a method to secure the device and mobile payments, the iPhone 6 Plus, Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ all include a fingerprint scanner (Touch ID in iPhone parlance). The Xperia 5 Premium follows this trend by including a fingerprint sensor in the device’s power button.

It is worth noting that the Xperia Z5 Premium is the only device in this comparison that is dust and waterproof with an Ingress Protection rating of IP65 and IP68. If you are an active user, this is a key consideration.

In addition to the Xperia Z5 Premium, Sony also unveiled two other phones in the Z5 lineup, the Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Compact.

All three Xperia Z5 models share the same Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM, run Android 5.1 Lollipop, have the same 23-megapixel camera tech, fingerprint sensor, and are dust and water proof.

The main differences are in battery sizes and display quality. The Xperia Z5 has a 5.2-inch full HD screen and the Xperia Z5 Compact comes fitted with a 4.6-inch 720p HD display. The Xperia Z5 Compact is also available in a range of bright colors, including red and yellow.
