Ubisoft plans to open a theme park in Malaysia for some reason
After the success of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando and the recent announcement of new Nintendo and Star Wars theme parks in the U.S., it seems like every entertainment company thinks it can open its own theme park. Apparently the latest company to hop on this trend is Ubisoft Entertainment SA, the game studio behind successful franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Prince of Persia, and others.
Ubisoft has announced that it plans to open its own theme park by 2020 in the idyllic tourist destination of—uh, Kuala Lumpur?
“Combining a rich portfolio of world-renowned brands and an expertise in designing highly interactive gaming experiences, Ubisoft aims to revolutionize guests’ journeys,” Ubisoft said in a statement. “The project is being led by Ubisoft Motion Pictures, who has a successful track record of expanding Ubisoft’s game brands to theme parks with the launch of the award-winning Rabbids Dark Ride at French park Futuroscope.”
For the new park, Ubisoft will be partnering with R-Segari Group (RSG), a development group that builds “integrated family destinations.”
“Together we are creating a place where every guest is a player, every ride is a playground, every visit is a game,” Jean de Rivières, senior vice president of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said in a statement. “In RSG, we’ve found a partner with a successful track record in working with international brands, a shared ambition to design the family destination of the future, and a wealth of expertise in theme park development.”
“RSG is committed to redefining family fun, and video games have taken an increasingly central role in entertainment for all ages,” added Ramelle Ramli, Chairman, RSG. “Partnering with Ubisoft means we’ll work with their creative teams to develop the first of what we believe will be a revolutionary new theme park experience. We are confident that this partnership agreement highly benefits both parties and consolidates our presence in the global family entertainment market.”
As for why the company chose Malaysia in particular, Ubisoft notes that according to a 2014 tourism report by the World Tourism Organization, Malaysia is the second most visited country in Asia.
Ubisoft says that the new park will cover over 10,000 square meters and will feature rides and attractions representing some of its most popular games, including Assassin’s Creed, Just Dance, and Rabbids.
