Microsoft rolls out new enterprise features for Windows 10

Microsoft is ready to update Windows 10 with three new enterprise-focused features that weren’t included in the initial release.

One of the most interesting new features is Microsoft’s Windows Store for Business, which is essentially a unified Windows Store where admins can make bulk purchases of business apps, and where authorized employees can also purchase third-party apps.

Also coming is a new Enterprise Data Protection system which allows data stored on devices to be encrypted, so only priveleged apps will be able to access it. Enterprise Data Protection should also be helpful for companies that have a BYOD policy, as it allows for enterprise data to be wiped remotely without affecting personal data in the event it’s deemed necessary to do so.

Finally, there’s a Microsoft Passport for enterprises, which allows admins to authenticate directly with apps, servers and websites, without the need for risky passwords.

The features will initially land on a test build of the OS, which means only those who’re signed up to the Windows Insider program will be able to access them at first. However, from Microsoft’s statement on the matter, we can assume it won’t be long until they reach general availability.

“As part of delivering Windows 10 as a service, enterprise customers can expect ongoing feature innovations that will keep them up-to-date with the latest technology and ongoing security updates for a secure experience they can trust,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Besides the new features, Microsoft is launching a new Surface Enterprise initiative in which it will partner with certain OEMs to offer enterprise services and support on paired Surface devices.

Dell Inc. is the first partner in this new initiative. The company will soon begin selling Surface Pro tablets to U.S. and Canadian companies via its commercial sales platform and online store, and those who buy them will be able take advantage of Dell’s managed warranty service for up to four years, plus Dell’s insurance, IT support, configuration and deployment services.
