Unity launches “director’s commentary for games” site called Made with Unity
Game engine maker Unity Technologies announced today that it would be launching a new developer-driven editorial platform called Made with Unity, which aims to spotlight Unity developers and their games.
“What if we collected stories written by Unity developers from around the globe and put it in a place for everyone to read? A director’s commentary for games, if you will,” Unity’s Matt Fini wrote in an introductory post explaining the impetus behind Made with Unity. “Knowing what went on behind the scenes could totally alter and enhance your experience of any creative medium.”
The new site is a community-driven blog that invites game developers to contribute articles about the challenges they face when designing their games, as well as the creative solutions they imagine to overcome them.
“Our aim is to give awesome games, including those that don’t normally get in the spotlight, a chance and maybe help find new audiences,” Fini said.
Fini offered a few submission guidelines to help developers get their articles featured:
- While there’s no official rule about article length, we’ve found that between 800 – 1200 words is a pretty good balance between depth and attention span
- Focus on an a unique area of your development and how you approached it (UI/UX, character design, story behind the story, etc)
- Think about how you and your colleagues work together. Is it unique? What are your thought processes when designing games?
- What was the origin of your game? What brought it from an idea to reality? What was your inspiration? Give us detail! We want to hear about the crazy story that formed the idea that would eventually become your game.
- Was there a specific moment when you found the fun in your game? What was it and how did you get there?
- How do you see your game relating to the gameplay niche or overall marketplace you’re a part of?
Made with Unity’s platform shares some similarities with Gamasutra, which is somewhat of a community-driven trade journal with articles ranging from unedited press releases to academic essays and opinion pieces. But while Gamasutra invites articles on the video game industry as a whole, Made with Unity will focus specifically on game development from people who use the Unity game engine.
