Smart home meets smartwatch: Apple Watch automation apps

During Apple’s Spring Forward event for the Apple Watch, apps that work with the device were also introduced. At the time, the selection was limited and only three home automation companies had apps for the Apple Watch which included Lutron Electronics Co., Inc.’s Caséta Wireless, Honeywell Lyric, and Alarm.com, Inc. But now that consumer interest is growing, more smart home apps have been added to the list.

Apple Watch compatible apps

August smart lock

AugustAugust Home Inc., makers of the August smart lock, is one the recent home automation companies to update its app to add support for the Apple Watch.

The update allows Apple Watch users to not only lock and unlock the August smart lock using the device but also view the lock’s most recent activities and get instant notifications directly on the wearer’s wrist.

Insteon

InsteonIn April, Insteon (Smartlabs, Inc.) announced that its full line of connected home products can be controlled using the Apple Watch. This includes the ability to control lights, appliances, thermostats and scenes.

There’s also the ability to view Insteon connected cameras and monitor a variety of sensors that includes motion, door/window, smoke/CO2 and water leak sensors, and the option to receive notifications when the sensors are triggered.

Philips Hue

Philips HueThe Apple Watch uses widgets from the Philips Hue app on your iPhone to allow the wearer to control Hue smart bulbs. You can use the Apple Watch to turn the lights on or off, and activate your favorite scenes.  With geofencing, your iPhone will get a notification on your Apple Watch that the lights have been turned on as you are approaching your home.

SmartThings

SmartThingsSamsung Electronics Co. Ltd.-owned SmartThings hub added support for the Apple Watch when it updated its iOS app in May. The updated app allowed Apple Watch users to control and monitor SmartThings devices on their wrist.

The integration is currently a bit limited, but utilizes SmartThings’ Hello, Home action, which allows the user to control multiple devices in one action to let Apple Watch users control connected devices. You need to arrange connected devices in Hello, Home buckets so you can control them using the Apple Watch. It’s not clear whether you can use Siri yet to control the connected  devices, but this could be a feature to look forward to in the future.

Savant

Savant Systems LLC added Apple Watch support back in May. This allowed wearers to easily see what systems are in use, or activate scenes with just a tap even if they are out of the house. They also get notifications on the Apple Watch if there’s a sudden change in temperature in the house or if the lights go on.

ecobee

ecobee3_watch_blogA2When ecobee announced that it added support for the Apple Watch, it made sure that its app stood out. Ensuring the app is easy to use on a small screen, ecobee added quick commands such as using the smartwatch’s Force Touch capability to access ‘Quick Changes’, or tapping on bubbles of your desired temperature.

Crestron

pr_apple-watch_low_res.jpg_The Crestron Electronics, Inc.’s Apple Watch app allows for precision control of connected devices. It allows users to instantly access common commands and scenes, provide information on status of connected things at a glance, and even allows users to customize user interface display with favorite control feature. Because of two-way communication, users can check what lights are on, if the garage door is open and even the current temperature.

Belkin

QuickSwitch_for_Belkin_WeMoBelkin International, Inc.’s WeMo line of connected home solutions can easily be monitored and controlled using the official WeMo app but it doesn’t currently support the Apple Watch. However, if you have WeMo in your home and an Apple Watch, you can download the QuickSwitch for Belkin WeMo to add Apple Watch support.

This app allows you to quickly toggle WeMo switches, outlets and bulbs which is a great feature on a small screen. The app also works allows for quick changes in the Today View on your iPhone.

Withings

Withings_HomeWithings SA offers Home, an HD security camera that can also transmit and receive sound simultaneously. It can help you capture and save special moments, 24-7 monitoring, and has sensors to monitor air quality. Using the Withings Home app, you can check on your family, see if your house is free of any intruders, and monitor the air quality right on your iPhone or Apple Watch and even watch a live stream feed on the small screen on your wrist.

Roomie

Roomie_RemoteRoomie Remote, Inc. prides itself with the app that allows you to control various connected appliances using your iPhone or iPad and now your Apple Watch. With the 3.3.0 version, the Roomie Remote app allows Apple Watch owners to directly access Rooms, Activities, and Virtual Remotes. Roomie supports various home automation devices such as Philips Hue, Nest, Insteon, Logitech, Lutron, and many others.
