Toshiba releases 2-in-1 Surface-like Windows 10 device: Champion of the super lightweight division
Hot on the heels of the release of the Surface Pro 4, as well as other Windows 10 hybrid tablets including the HP Spectre x2, Lenovo MIIX 700 and Dell XPS 12, Japan’s Toshiba Corp. has come out with its own 12-inch 2-in-1 that it says is the thinnest and lightest of them all.
The Toshiba dynaPad, that comes with a uber-thin keyboard dock and a high-precision stylus, is indeed a super-lightweight. At 0.27 inches thick and only weighing 1.25 pounds (2.2 pounds with dynaPad keyboard attached) it is significantly smaller than the Surface Pro 4 that is 0.36 inches think and weighs 1.69 pounds without the keyboard attached.
One of the main features of the dynaPad hwoever is its Wacom Active Electrostatics high precision TruPen that works with mesh sensor technology (the pen is suitable for right handed or left handed persons). “It’s designed to replicate the natural feeling of writing with a pen on paper – even mirroring a common-size notebook, for a very natural and fluid handwriting experience,” wrote the Windows team in a recent blog. This will work in tandem with Microsoft’s annotation features in the new Edge browser.

The dynaPad will feature updated versions of Toshiba’s business applications, which includes TruNote, TruCapture, and TruRecorder for collecting notes, images, and files that can be organized and shared. But it will also come with new apps, TruNote Clip and TruNote Share, for capturing and sharing screen clips and handwritten notes in real time. As a Windows 10 device it will also be integrated with Microsoft’s Office suite, Cortana and Continuum.
As for specs Toshiba said that there will be two models, each packing an Intel AtomTM X5-Z8300 processor. It will come with 12-inch 1,920-by-1,280 IPS display, 4GB RAM, 64GB of flash storage (can be upgraded to 128 GB) and a battery that will last around seven hours.
The dynaPad won’t be available in the U.S. and Europe until the first quarter of 2016, but is available for pre-order in Japan right now for close to $1,170.
