Big events like the Oracle OpenWorld 2015 conference are a place for companies to make the announcements that will drive their business for the year, and this one was no exception. Oracle delivered a keynote speech regarding its vision of the Cloud and what place Oracle has in the coming digital future.
With the conference heading into its second day, John Furrier and Brian Gracely, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down to talk about the events they’d seen so far. The takeaway was that Oracle made no bones about staking its claim to the Cloud.
Furrier felt Oracle’s keynote speech was meant to deliver a message: “We are in the Cloud business.” Gracely agreed, pointing out that Oracle also laid down a timeline for its steps into the cloud. This timeline was part of a very long-term strategy, one developed so that enterprise customers don’t feel left behind, he said.
The Cloud will be part of the tech world for a long time to come. Furrier elaborated on this point by relating a quote that he heard, where 30 percent of companies are investigating the Cloud today, but 100 percent of companies will be in the Cloud in the near future.
Oracle is not the only major business setting their sights on the Cloud. Furrier asked the question: How will Oracle defend its position? Gracely replied with a simple answer: tons of cash. Oracle’s investment into Cloud technology is huge. It can make that investment, Gracely said, and hire the expertise necessary. Oracle also has good situational awareness in the market, he added.
Furrier expanded the question, given that other companies in the same space operate under similar conditions: How can Oracle compete against them? Gracely responded by saying that the real competition in IT comes from the status quo. Businesses don’t like to change up their infrastructure or vendors. Oracle has a strong position here because it is status quo, he said.
