Infrastructure goes through ‘biggest change in 25 years’ | #oow15

It may be cliche to say that technology advances quickly, but that is the only way to describe the innovations in infrastructure today, according to Dave Donatelli, executive VP of converged infrastructure at Oracle.

“All that type of speed is having a huge impact on infrastructure,” Donatelli told John Furrier and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Oracle OpenWorld 2015. “I think we’re going through the biggest change in 25 years,” he added.

Donatelli explained that the way Oracle is staying on top of the rapidly changing industry is through heavy spending on research and development, which he said is unmatched by Oracle’s competitors. “It is because we’re investing so heavily,” he said. “It’s not that others don’t have an opportunity … but you have to have a software stack and be willing to invest like we are.”

Engineered systems ‘the most efficient way to do infrastructure’

Speaking about Oracle’s engineered systems products, Donatelli said that many customers go through a similar journey.

“From a customer’s point of view, they all go through a similar process. ‘We thought your stuff was too expensive. We tried to build it ourselves, then reluctantly bought an engineered system … and in total cost of ownership, saved a lot of money.'”

Donatelli added, “‘It’s the most efficient way to do infrastructure, and there’s enough real-world cases to show that’s true.”
