Some of the Steam Store’s smaller seasonal sales may not get users as excited as the gigantic Summer and Winter sales, but this year’s Steam Halloween Sale might change that by offering great deals on dozens of popular titles.
The Halloween sale will run until November 2 at 10am PST. As is the usual case with the first day of a Steam sale, the website and client appear to be having some issues at the moment due to high traffic, so if the sale page is not working, try visiting it again after a few minutes.
While the Steam frontpage advertises deals on “spooky” games, there are quite a few discounts on non-spooky games as well, including 50 percent off Cities: Skylines, as well as 33 percent off Grand Theft Auto V (yes, it is actually on sale this time).
Of course, the real stars of the show are the horror games, and there are plenty of great games on the list that get your heart pumping. Below are just a few examples to get you started, so be sure to check out the full Steam Halloween sale page for the complete list.
There have been a few decent games (and a few not-so-decent games) made out of the Aliens franchise, but this game stands head and shoulders above the rest. Rather than going the usual action FPS route, Alien: Isolation recaptures the claustrophobic sense of dread from the original Alien by forcing players through cramped corridors as they do their best to avoid being mauled to death by the xenomorph. The game was also recently released for Mac and SteamOS.
While 15 percent may not sound like a huge discount, it is not bad considering Soma was released just over one month ago. Developed by Amnesia: The Dark Descent creator Frictional Games, Soma is a genre mashing sci-fi/horror/mystery set in an underwater lab filled with things that want to eat your face. Frictional describes the plot as “an unsettling story about identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human.” Soma currently holds the coveted “Overwhelmingly Positive” review rating on Steam.
If you’re not in the mood for sci-fi, you can pick up one of the Amnesia games instead, as they are both also on sale.
Fair warning, Layers of Fear is an Early Access game, which means that it is currently unfinished, but what we have seen so far from developer Bloober Team SA looks very promising. Because Layers of Fear falls into the “walking simulator” game genre, it can’t rely on the player’s fear of dying in-game to keep the tension up. Instead, it uses clever camera tricks that change the architecture of the house when you aren’t looking, which is a great way to keep you too scared to even turn around.
There is also special Halloween-only room currently added to an early area of the game, which will only be available for a limited time.
