AltspaceVR lets you play Dungeons & Dragons with your long distance friends

Tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons have brought geeky groups of friends together for over 40 years now, but as is the case with all fun things, real life often gets in the way, and it can be hard to keep a D&D group together when one or more members move away. Players have made many attempts to play D&D online while recreating the classic tabletop experience, but even with video chat tools like Skype, it is never quite the same.

That may soon change, however, thanks to a new virtual Dungeons & Dragons experience created by AltspaceVR Inc, a virtual reality startup that raised an additional $10.3 million in funding earlier this year for a total of over $15.7 million. Through a partnership with D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast LLC, AltspaceVR has taken the idea of virtual telepresence and introduced it to the world of magic missiles and 20-sided dice.

“D&D is extremely social, which is why we are so excited to offer it in AltspaceVR,” Eric Romo, founder and CEO of AltspaceVR, said in a statement. “Players love it! We’ve seen them hang out together for sessions lasting six hours—previously only developers spent that long in VR.”

“AltspaceVR bridges the gap between Dungeons & Dragons video games and physically sitting around a table with friends,” added Nathan Stewart, brand director for Dungeons & Dragons. “You get the same sense of excitement and drama in the AltspaceVR tavern, from laughing at your buddy’s funny goblin voice to watching the d20 bounce and finally land on the natural 20 you needed to hit the beholder terrorizing your party.”

AltspaceVR’s new D&D experience includes fully licensed character sheets and virtual figurines, as well as various terrain tiles that will allow players to create their own virtual game maps.

Since players are mostly stationary, AltspaceVR’s tabletop experience seems to avoid one of the most common pitfalls of virtual reality, motion sickness, and the relatively simple graphics are not as resource-intensive as something like CCP Games’ Eve: Valkyrie.
