Docker is engaging the open-source community and the enterprise. And to find what’s new with Docker, Jeff Frick, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, talked with Marianna Tessel, SVP of Engineering for Docker, Inc., during Structure 2015.
“We are busy building our stack and products as users use Docker and evolve in their use, and we want to be ready with the products they need,” Tessel said.
The open-source container company is putting an emphasis on the registration of its 1.9 release and releasing new products, such as Docker Swarm (native clustering for Docker) and various other products that include Docker’s management layer and Docker Universal Control Plane, which offers an on-premises management solution for Docker apps, no matter where they run.
Additionally, Docker acquired Tutum, Inc., a service for the cloud that assists in the deployment and management of Docker containers. Tessel noted that Docker is listening to users and trying to provide what they need.
When it comes to managing internal teams and contributors to Docker, Tessel called it a good balance and noted that 70 percent of all contributions are external.
“We want to be true to our open-source contributors and audience, as well as build commercial solutions,” she said. “Actually, in a funny way, our internal teams relate to open source in a way that companies behave with open source.”
Tessel described the open source process as very different and very powerful. By working with the community and receiving feedback is a great opportunity for her.
Tight-lipped about what to expect at the next DockerCon, Tessel provided a few hints. Docker is to continuing to evolve the platform, investing in security and things to create ease of use and sophistication. Creating commercial products to help the enterprise is also on the list.
