Crowdfunded tech campaigns that knocked it out of the park in 2015
Crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo, Inc. and Kickstarter PBC are proving more and more popular when companies or individuals need to raise money for their ideas. As 2015 draws to a close, we look back on some of the most successful technology campaigns. From smartwatches to eBikes and custom sabers, these crowdfunding campaigns well exceeded their initial funding goals.
Pebble Time Smartwatch
Pebble Technology launched its crowdfunding campaign with an initial goal of raising half a million dollars for its Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel smartwatches. The campaign went on to raise over $20 million from 78,471 backers, and shipments of the device started on May 28. For a more in-depth look at the campaign, read our full Pebble Time article.
Perfectly fitting headphones
It seems people want properly fitting headphones, and we have seen some very successful campaigns this year.
Revols Bluetooth headphones that mold to the shape of your ears has raised $1,217,276 from 5,213 backers, well over its initial $100,000 goal. The campaign will still run for another 15 days. For a more in-depth look at the campaign, read our full Revols article.
Phazon are wireless earbuds, guaranteed not to fall out. With 22 days left to go on its campaign, the Phazon earbuds have surpassed its initial goal of $80,000 and has raised $742,567 from 3,733 backers.
Shenmue makes a comeback
If you were a fan of Shenmue in the late 1990s, you will be happy to know that the game is making a comeback after a very successful crowdfunding campaign. A massive 69,320 backers pledged over $6 million. Development of the third installment of Shenmue is still underway. For a more in-depth look at the campaign, read our full Shenmue article.
Nano drones take to the skies
Not surprisingly, drones have also proved popular on crowdfunding sites this year. The Micro Drone 3.0 proved very popular, raising a final amount of $3,082,351 from 31,580 backers. The drones are currently undergoing final testing before shipping starts.
The ONAGOfly Smart Nano Drone still has 15 days left on its campaign. It is also proving popular, but not as popular as the Micro Done 3.0. The ONAGOfly has reached its initial $150,000 goal and has currently raised $833,204 from 3,972 backers.
An affordable eBike
The lightweight and versatile Sondors electric bike raised money on both Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Its Indiegogo campaign raised over $6 million, and shipping started in August. On Kickstarter, the campaign raised over $1.3 million, with production of the electric bike already underway.
For the ‘Star Wars’ fans out there
Adaptive Saber Parts allows anyone to build their very own custom saber. And it was clearly something that people were waiting for, with the crowdfunding campaign well exceeding its initial goal. The final campaign raised $1,064,845 from 659 backers. Backers will have to wait until February before they can start building their custom sabers.
