The long awaited sequel to the cult classic platformer Psychonauts has reached its $3.3 million crowdfunding funding goal on Fig with only five days remaining in its campaign. The campaign was first announced by developer Double Fine Productions last month at The Game Awards, and it had already raised over $1 million within a few days.
“Holy Smokes! We did it you guys! Psychonauts 2 is now fully funded!” Double Fine wrote in an update on Fig. “We want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for making this possible. We’ve wanted to make this game for a long time, and now we finally can! So thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“So what happens next? Well, we still have 5 days to go, so we’ll be continuing the campaign. Everything we raise will go into making the game better, bigger, and shinier, so let’s keep going!”
The outstanding success of the Psychonauts 2 campaign will go a long way in legitimizing Fig as a crowdfunding platform.
Like Kickstarter, Fig allows users to back campaigns at varying price points with tiered levels of backer rewards. Fig differs from Kickstarter by allowing unaccredited investors (i.e. basically anyone) to invest money in a project in return for royalties rather than backer rewards.
Basically, instead of getting a t-shirt and some game schwag, you could receive cash rewards based on how well the game performs after release. According to Double Fine’s projections, a $500 investment would see a return of $800 if the game manages to sell as many copies as the original Psychonauts.
“We could use unaccredited investors in combination with crowdfunding to create a whole new way of investing,” Double Fine founder and Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer explained shortly after the launch of the Fig campaign. “That’s what I wanted. I wanted to be able to share royalties with people.”
According to the campaign page, $1.7 million of the funds for Pyschonauts 2 came from people classified as investors rather than normal backers, more than half of the total amount raised.
