In all of the excitement surrounding the release of Fallout 4, you may have forgotten Bethesda Game Studios’ surprisingly successful mobile game, Fallout Shelter, but the developer has kept up its promise of adding new content to the game. This week Bethesda announced what it called “the biggest update yet” for Fallout Shelter.
The most exciting change to arrive in the new update is the introduction of a crafting system, which will allow players to create their own weapons and armor.
Currently, weapons and armor are found randomly either through loot contained in lunchboxes, which can be bought with real cash or earned through various in-game methods, or by sending Vault Dwellers to explore the wasteland. The new crafting system will allow players to create their own items, but it is not clear yet whether they will be able to craft the specific items they want or if the items they create will also be randomized.
As part of this new system, the randomized loot contained in Fallout Shelter’s lunchboxes will soon include junk items that can be used as crafting material.
In addition to the crafting system, Bethesda said that it will be introducing new weapons and outfits to Fallout Shelter’s loot table, and it will also be adding parrots the the game’s available pets…for some reason. Other new features include a barber shop to change the appearance of your Dwellers and real-time night and day cycles (Bethesda explained: “Because authentic Vault simulation is our #1 goal!”).
So far, the studio has not revealed when exactly the new update will be arriving, saying only that it is “coming soon,” but with the first official DLC for Fallout 4 arriving later this month, it seems likely that the Fallout Shelter update won’t be far behind.
