Despite a few launch day server hiccups, Ubisoft Entertainment SA’s The Division seems to have been the company’s most successful launch to date, selling more copies in 24 hours than all of its previous games. The company noted that the game has also broken its record for digital copies sold.
Ubisoft did not reveal the exact sales figures for The Division, but the company’s previous record holder, Watchdogs, had sold over 4 million copies within its first week.
“The launch of The Division is a tremendous achievement for Ubisoft, and demonstrates our unrivaled capacity to create fantastic new game brands and transform them into entertainment blockbusters,” Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, said in a blog post.
“This is a momentous day for Ubisoft, but more importantly it marks the start of millions of players’ enduring engagement in The Division’s game world, which we are confident they will love.”
In the blog post, Ubisoft boasted that it has had “three of the top four most successful new game brand launches in the history of the gaming industry.”
The success of The Division is likely particularly welcome for Ubisoft after the game’s extended development cycle, as The Division’s release had been delayed multiple times.
The Division’s sales figures are also good news for both and gamers and the video game industry in general, as it has once again proven that even massive AAA studios like Ubisoft can still produce successful new IPs without having to rely on their already established franchises.
It is true that the game does have the Tom Clancy name tacked onto it, but it is not a continuation of any previous Tom Clancy game series, unlike Rainbow Six Siege, which was released in December.
