Cisco revamps engineering business around Cloud and IoT

Networking giant Cisco Systems Ltc. Has just announced a major restructuring of its engineering business unit under CEO Chuck Robbins.

The reorganization, announced via an email to Cisco staff from Robbins, will see Cisco’s engineering efforts divided into four separate departments, namely: Applications and IoT, Cloud Services and Platforms, Network, and Security.

In addition, 18-year company veteran Kelly Ahuja, who was previously leading Cisco’s service provider business, leaves the company, with ex-Cablevision Systems Corp. executive Yvette Kanouff taking over her role. Kanouff has worked at Cisco since 2014 as its VP of Cloud Solutions.

Cisco’s entire engineering business will continue to report directly to Pankaj Patel, the company’s chief development officer, even though he’s also set to leave the company in the second half of this year, having been appointed to his current role by former CEO John Chambers.

Under the reorganization, Rowan Trollope will continue to head up Cisco’s Applications and IoT business, but will now report directly to Robbins. David Goeckeler will continue to lead the company’s security business, also reporting directly to Robbins. Meanwhile, former Hewlett-Packard Co. exec Zorawar Biri Singh, a recent Robbins hire, will lead the newly Cloud Services and Platforms unit. A veteran in cloud since his days at HP, Singh has been taking an active role in pushing Cisco’s cloud gear even before the announcement.

Cisco currently owns 26 percent of the network gear and software market in the cable industry, according to a newly publsihed SNL Kagan report. However, the company’s service provider business has struggled for a number of years.

Closing in on his first year at the helm, Robbins has already made a number of moves aimed at turning Cisco’s service provider business around. Last year he sold Cisco’s set-top business to Technicolor Ltd. for $600 million.
