Does the new Oracle Cloud Machine finally address public cloud’s Achilles heel? | #CloudWorld

What’s not to like about the cloud? Businesses can export architectural, maintenance and operational concerns to a cloud service provider for a reasonable subscription fee and cut their IT expenditures in the bargain. Well, there’s a small wrinkle that has been there since the beginning: security. Though many cloud service providers have made improvements in the data loss department and promise a high level of security, none have promised the level of security that Oracle now does with its new Oracle Cloud Machine offering.

Karen Sigman, VP of the Platform Business Group at Oracle, told John Furrier and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, that this is an unprecedented new paradigm in cloud computing. She mentioned a Wall Street Journal article that described it aptly as “turning cloud computing inside out.”

“You’re not connecting to our public cloud,” Sigman said. “We’re actually putting it behind your firewall and actually creating your own public cloud that’s managed by Oracle.” Sigman claimed that this combines the best of both worlds — the ease of outsourced management with the security of on-prem. “You don’t make the architectural decisions-we do, just like in the public cloud,” she said.

The ultimate in security?

When Sigman made the claim that this represents the ultimate in secure cloud computing, Furrier asked her pointedly if there are zero security breaches in this system. Sigman replied that there were absolutely no breaches to her knowledge. “Absolutely. This is the ultimate in security,” she said.
