The Big Data revolution is a new thing to business, so it’s no surprise there is some unmapped territory. Tools and platforms like Hadoop are great at what they do, but every company has its own unique needs. It’s no surprise there are gaps when it comes to setting up Big Data systems.
To shed some light on these issues, John Furrier (@furrier) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke to Praveen Kankariya and Vineet Tyagi during the BigDataSV 2016 event in San Jose, California, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek, including news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference. Kankariya is the CEO of Impetus Technologies, Inc. Tyagi, CTO of Impetus.
The conversation started with a look at what Impetus does for customers. Kankariya replied that it looks for the gaps. To use Hadoop as a modern, viable data warehouse, he said, there are a lot of things missing. He also pointed out that the cost of keeping up a legacy data warehouse was becoming unsustainable.
Kankariya related that early on, they realized that Impetus was reinventing the wheel with every customer. So, he said, they took matters into their own hands and created tools to help automate the process. Projects, he said, used to take nine to 10 months. Now, it’s days or weeks.
Tyagi then mentioned a recent announcement, concerning a new data warehouse modernization practice that Impetus was now offering. Aside from modernization, the service also involves migration tools.
Customers are using these tools and platforms to accelerate building their applications, Kankariya said. The systems and apps customers use are already finely tuned for their needs, so preserving those systems is important. By modernizing, customers save significant amounts of time and money.
