Trumped again: Hackers take on Trump hotels, steal customers’ credit card info

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has had a few choice words to say about the United States’ cyber security, but his own record isn’t spotless either. His hotel chain has just suffered a data breach, resulting in credit fraud for customers who have stayed at any of several Trump Hotel Collection properties.

According to Gizmodo and Krebs On Security, a recent pattern of credit card fraud indicates that customers who have stayed at Trump Hotels in New York, Honolulu, and Toronto, with a significant likelihood that other locations have been equally compromised. The incidents have occurred within the past two to three months, and were just recently revealed, meaning that anyone who has stayed at one of the chain’s hotels any time recently is at risk.

This is not the first time Trump hotels have suffered from data breaches either. Sometime between May 2014 and June 2015, a hacker gained access to the Trump Hotel Collection’s systems, which was not discovered until July, and not reported until October. If this hacker managed to steal the customer data through the same or similar means, that indicates a major lack of security.

Anyone who has recently stayed at a Trump Hotel is recommended to keep a close eye on his or her credit card activity. The previous time such a data breach occurred, the company offered affected customers a year of free identity theft protection, so keep a close eye out for such offers soon.
