EMC announced its product suite called Unity, a mid-market storage solution that will revolutionize storage for the small to mid-sized company. The products are inexpensive and have the ability to scale and boast three times the performance of previous versions of the product, the company said during EMC World 2016, held this week in Las Vegas.
John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke with Jeff Boudreau, SVP and GM for the Enterprise and Midrange Systems Division at EMC, to discuss the new offerings and what it means to the small and mid-sized enterprise.
Boudreau started by explaining that flash is critical in compute, network or storage. For EMC, it is in its storage offerings. “We needed to make sure that we had a strong offering in the mid-range and that is what Unity is all about,” he said, also noting that the price point for Unity starts at under $18,000.
Responding to Vellante’s question about how Unity came about, Boudreau said, “If you look at the mid-market, the key capabilities they were looking for was simplicity … and they were looking for affordability. They were looking for a powerful box in a very dense package.” He added that organizations needed help simplifying operational management along with drastically reducing capital infrastructure.
Boudreau described how EMC took a “clean sheet approach,” noting two new innovations that came forward for prior technologies. He said, “With VNX 2 [EMC’s unified storage solution], we had a major leap with multicore optimizations … that type of technology was brought forward in Unity. In addition to that, we took the simplicity and support ecosystem of VNXe and brought that forward. Other than that, it is pretty much all new.”
During the interview, Boudreau talked about the price points and the ability to scale. He said that the products will be available through EMC’s direct sales force, channel partners and online store.
