In the very short time DSSD flash storage technology has been on the scene, it has already begun to drastically improve the way database technology operates.
John McCool, SVP and GM of DSSD at EMC, sat down with John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during EMC World 2016 in Las Vegas.
Because of the way DSSD operates, it inherently has very low latency. This has a major impact on the way databases operate, because it can actually become part of the compute cycle, whereas before the latency and write time of a standard drive made this completely impractical.
This means that intensive functions such as data analytics are able to operate at a much higher speed, combing through much more data than was previously possible.
Several database functions are already showing marked improvement. Bank fraud detection, which is done at point-of-sale terminals such as ATMs, is getting better because the new technology has made it possible to comb through huge blocks of data much faster. Genomic sequencing, which has always involved massive amounts of human DNA data, is also beginning to be done much faster.
“DSSD has a technologist feel to it,” said McCool. Programmers and developers are seeing new frontiers in development and ways of doing new things that weren’t possible before.
Additionally, they are also realizing some things that were done a certain way in the past could have been done better, and will also benefit from the new technology.
