All things data: From geeks to board room | #infa16

Informatica Corp. has a specialized approach called Master Data Management (MDM) that eliminates much of the overhead costs and complexities of last year. MDM is essentially a mapping system for Big Data. At Informatica, MDM has gone to the Cloud as a Service, as opposed to on-premise. This approach negates “the hassle of the infrastructure,” stated Ron Karel, VP of Product Strategy and Marketing, Master Data Management, at Informatica.

Karel joined John Furrier (@furrier) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, for an interview during Informatica World 2016. When discussing the shift to Cloud, Karel remarked, “We don’t want to worry about the hardware” or the upgrades. Therefore, Informatica is “taking the on [the upgrades] for our customers,” concluded Karel. With Informatica watching the infrastructure, customers are free to focus on the mastered data. The company is working on “transformational initiatives” that deal heavily with data integration.

Driving business outcomes

When asked about where the direct MDM is headed, Karel commented that MDM is moving away from a “warehousing” approach and becoming “that edge that is driving business outcomes.” Karel went on remark that it’s paramount that data is trustworthy. He continued, saying developers “bet their careers on the stack.”

In recent years, Karel has observed a power shift, which has led to data going “from geeks to the board room.” Karel summarized his job is “to educate” and to be “passionate data advocates.” Perhaps, most importantly, Informatica seeks to “evangelize” business management.
