Vonage embraces the telecom transformation, pushes new services | #NEXTConf

What started in 2001 as a Voice over IP (VoIP) company has transformed into a comprehensive communications solution for individuals and businesses.

Over the past three years, Vonage SVP and GM Michael Tempora says that the company has acquired six companies to expand on its business services. “With [the acquisition of] Nexmo, we launched into the communications platform as a service business,” he added.

Stu Miniman (@stu) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, asked Tempora during the Nutanix .NEXT Conference about the radical transformation of the telecommunications industry. “IP has really changed the way communication works,” he said. “In the past, you had a desk phone. Today, your identity as a business user can work on your desk phone, mobile phone or on your tablet, so you have a lot more flexibility. For our business customers, we can also provide PDX-type services without hardware.”

Unified communications

Tempora also said that unified communications drives Vonage’s business. “Customers want their communications wherever they are and on whatever device they use,” he explained. “Whether it’s a voice, conference or video call, they want it to work, and they want it to work on their preferred device. That’s what unified communications brings to our customers.”

Vonage partners with Nutanix, Inc. to provide Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and virtual desktop services. “We work very closely with companies like Apple when they have iOS upgrades,” Tempora said. “And we partner with Nutanix to find ways to further streamline our infrastructure.”
