Game controller provider gets played as hacker steals payment data

KontrolFreek, LLC., a provider of video game gear and accessories, may have less control than it had hoped, as a data breach stole the payment card information from multiple customers. Anyone who purchased gaming gear from them between October 2015 and April 2016 is at risk, and should expect notification soon.

According to the Notice of Data Breach sent out by KontrolFreek, an unauthorized third party accessed the servers some time between October 21st and April 7th. During that time, the hacker had access to personal information, including names, addresses, payment card numbers, and security codes. Of course, that’s all the information it takes to purchase any number of things, so the risk of credit card theft is high.

KontrolFreek has secured its website and, according to SC Magazine, has hired a security expert for forensic investigations. Additionally, the company will be offering 12 months of free identity protection services from AllClear ID to any impacted customers.

Along with the protection services, KontrolFreek recommends customers order a credit report, as U.S. law entitles them to. It’s also giving customers a Reference Guide, and has opened a phone line for anyone with questions or concerns to call.

KontrolFreek is taking all the right steps following a data breach – report, review, notify customers, protect customers, and take steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Anyone who has purchased from them should be on guard, and perhaps even replace their credit cards, but such is the risk of online shopping these days.
