Cici’s Pizza data breach serves a slice of credit card theft

There are a few things you don’t want with your pizza. Some don’t like anchovies, others don’t enjoy pineapple on their pie, but it’s safe to say that the last thing anyone wants with their slice is a side of data breach. Unfortunately, such is the case at Cici’z Pizza, a popular chain, which has confirmed a credit card breach at over 135 locations across the United States.

According to BatBlue, various restaurant locations began noticing issues with point-of-sale systems back in March 2016, which led to the discovery of malware in their systems. While each intrusion was dealt with on a store-by-store basis up until July, any customer who went to any of the impacted restaurants could have jeopardized their credit card information.

No other customer information was jeopardized, although some of the intrusions have been traced back to 2015, so that still leaves a lot of customers at risk. Cici’s has stated that the malware threat “has been eliminated,” although not all restaurants have been declared “threat free” yet, so perhaps pay with cash the next time you pick up a slice.

Brian Krebs of KrebsOnSecurity explains that: “Point-of-sale based malware has driven most of the credit card breaches over the past two years, including intrusions at Target and Home Depot, as well as breaches at a slew of point-of-sale vendors. The malware is usually installed via hacked remote administration tools. Once the attackers have their malware loaded onto the point-of-sale devices, they can remotely capture data from each card swiped at that cash register.”

Law enforcement has been notified, in addition to any relevant payment card networks and banks, and Cici’s is working with 403 Labs, a third-party forensics team, to look into the breach. Customers are not receiving any free credit monitoring, but are advised to monitor their accounts.
