YouTube Kids now supports YouTube Red ad-free and offline viewing

Parents who don’t want to expose their children to advertising on YouTube videos now have an option of paying for the privilege with the video giant announcing that its YouTube Kids app now supports YouTube Red in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

If you’re not familiar with either product YouTube Red was launched in October 2015 and offers a paid, ad-free subscription service that includes additional features such as offline videos; YouTube Kids, as the name may suggest, is a kid-friendly app launched in February 2015 that only delivers child-friendly content, be it that it was accused of indecently exposing Michael Jackson’s crotch at one stage.

The combination of the two products delivers what YouTube describes as a whole new set of features for the family to enjoy including ad-free videos that let kids learn and laugh along with their favorite characters without paid ads; offline videos delivering “videos when you need ‘em, even if you don’t have a connection,” and uninterrupted music that “keeps family sing-alongs going while you use other apps on your phone.”

YouTube added that they’ve also got new updates to the YouTube Kids app on the way that will give parents more choice on how to customize the content that doesn’t or does appear in the app.

Solid

While YouTube has never announced how many subscribers it has for its paid YouTube Red experience it did announce a three-month special signup price of 99 cents a month in March to attract new signups, indicating that perhaps it wasn’t going as well as expected.

The YouTube Kids app, on the other hand, has been well received with between 5 million and 10 million downloads in Google Play alone with a 4 and a half star rating.

Combining both YouTube Kids and YouTube Red offers a far more solid product undertaking that will particularly address concerns from parents about children being exposed to advertising, whether those concerns are founded sensibly or not.

To use the new services parents need both the YouTube Kids app and YouTube Red membership, then they sign into YouTube Red from the YouTube Kids app and follow what YouTube describes as “simple steps” to get things rolling.
