IFA 2016 preview: What to expect from Samsung, Lenovo, Sony, more

IFA, Europe’s largest technology show, officially starts on September 2 and runs until September 7, but major technology companies will be holding press conferences from Wednesday in the lead-up to the event.

All the big names, including Samsung, Lenovo, Huawei, Sony, and Asus will be at the event to showcase its latest products and future innovations. One of the big players who won’t make an appearance is Apple, but it’s launch event of the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch 2, will capture some of the limelight as it is rumored for September 7.

We look at what you can expect from IFA 2016, including the latest smartwatches, smartphones, tablets, TVs and more.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers

Samsung

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will host its Unpacked event a few days before the start of IFA, on August 31. If the invite is anything to go by we can expect to see the launch of the new Gear S3 smartwatch. Rumors suggest the Gear S3 will retain the same rotating bezel as the S2, but will come equipped with additional sensors like an altimeter, barometer, speedometer, and integrated GPS. Users will also be hoping for a thinner design and a faster processor.

Samsung has also launched an iOS beta program for Gear S2 and Fit 2, so we can expect the new S3 to be compatible with iPhones relatively soon.

The event will take place at 6 pm CET and you can watch it live on Samsung’s site.

Asus

A recent tweet from ASUSTek Computer Inc. suggests we could see some exciting products from them on August 31. The company launched its ZenWatch 2 at last year’s IFA so we are likely to see them launch the latest version, the ZenWatch 3.

Unlike its predecessor, the ZenWatch 3 is rumored to be circular, compared to the current rectangular design; however, it is likely to stick with Android Wear. It is also rumored to launch with Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz) and a stainless steel back.

Other smartwatch launches

At IFA 2016, Lenovo Group Ltd-owned Motorola will likely unveil its third generation of its Moto 360. Fitbit Inc. is expected to launch its next generation of wearables, the Fitbit Flex 2 and Fitbit Charge 2, codenamed Laryon and Fermion, at IFA.

Acer Inc. could be entering the smartwatch market, but in order to stand out it is rumored to be launching a “smartwatch for the gaming market.” Playing games on a smartwatch would be incredibly difficult so at this stage, a gaming smartwatch is pure speculation.

Smartphones

LG

LG Electronics Inc. has a launch event scheduled for its LG V20 on September 6 in San Francisco, which will be the first smartphone to launch with Android Nougat out of the box. However, we could see a sneak peek of the LG V20 at IFA.

Rumors about the LG V20 suggest a 20MP or 21MP dual lens rear camera and 8MP front-facing camera. Other rumors have an increase in battery size to 4,000 mAh, a Snapdragon 820 processor and either 3GB or 4GB of RAM.

The company could also launch its successor to the LG G Flex 2, the LG G Flex 3. Rumors suggest modular capabilities, a 5.5-inch curved QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM.

Lenovo

Lenovo’s teaser video for IFA includes everything from tablets to new Moto Mods, an intuitive keyboard, new devices and more.

The video also showcases a bendable smartphone, similar to the one seen at Lenovo Tech World in June.

Huawei

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., who recently took the lead in the Chinese smartphone market, could unveil its Mate 9 smartphone at IFA. Rumors surrounding the Mate 9 include a 5.9-inch display, a dual-rear camera, up to 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM.

Sony

Sony Corp., who have a press conference scheduled for September 1, are expected to launch the Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact.

Tablets, VR headsets and TVs

Samsung will also likely launch its Galaxy Tab S3 at its Unpacked event on August 31, or at IFA. There aren’t many rumors making the rounds as Samsung likes to keep its tablets under wraps in the lead up to the launch. One rumor suggests the Galaxy Tab S3 will feature the more powerful Exynos 8890 chip that comes with the Galaxy S7.

Samsung is also expected to launch curved monitors at IFA that will come with quantum dot (QD) technology, ideal for the gamers out there.

Acer, in partnership with Starbreeze Studios, could launch its Panoramic StarVR. Acer invested $9 million into Starbreeze in June.

IFA is renowned for showcasing the latest technology when it comes to TVs and media players. IFA 2016 is likely to showcase HDR TVs and 4K Blu-ray players.
