Will there be “one platform to rule them all” in the cloud integration scramble? And will VMware, Inc. be that platform? theCUBE’s coverage of day two at VMWorld 2016 wrapped up with a lively discussion that included Peter Burris, (@plburris), Stu Miniman (@stu), Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), and John Furrier(@furrier), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team.
The discussion started with Townsend saying he was surprised at how many event attendees were really excited about the level of integration VMware has done with all of its products. “They’re really excited about their jobs becoming easier,” he said.
Burris added that people are also very excited about the ecosystem being built, and it’s been a bit of a “party atmosphere” at VMworld.
It might not be completely smooth sailing, though. “As VMware has expanded the market they’re trying to go after, that is a shift of the ecosystem, and there’s been some ripples and waves as to how that happens, because we’ve seen the story before — Microsoft, Intel and others as they try to have more power out there,” noted Miniman. “There are going to be some fits and spurts.”
“VMware has moved from a one-product company and ecosystem to a multiple products and technologies, much broader, mature company,” said Furrier.
However, is it enough to beat out other companies in the cloud? And is there a lock-in spec for vendors in the cloud? “The intercloud problem is going to be a real problem,” said Furrier. “But at the same time, it’s not clear there’s going to be a one platform to rule them all, either. … This is a scramble. Everybody’s trying to get the high ground, and VMware’s in the hunt.”
