Analyst says early adopters love their Oracle T7 servers

The Oracle T7 server with M7 technology baked in is a good deal for heavy Oracle users, providing much higher performance at a significantly lower cost than the T5 generation, writes Wikibon CTO David Floyer (@DLfloyer).

Early adopters extolled the advantages of the T7 for its high security and higher scalability per core, allowing significant consolidation of their Oracle databases and applications onto fewer cores.

The T7-2 runs at a higher clock speed, making it about 2.4 times faster than the T5-2. It has twice the cores and twice the threads. It runs at 4.13 GHz, a 15 percent increase over the T5-2. Additionally, the M7 technology baked into the silicon in the T7 offloads several functions, including encryption, compression and advanced analysis.

The result for users with multiple Oracle applications running on large Oracle databases is a significant decrease in the number of cores needed for the same performance levels. This creates a significant reduction in Oracle software licensing costs, which are charged by the core. This results in a lower total lifetime cost for the stack.

Floyer’s recommendation for all heavy Oracle shops is to seriously consider upgrading their hardware as soon as possible. He warns that this analysis presumes intense use of the Oracle environment and does not apply to shops with low-demand Oracle environments.
