Oculus Touch arrives: how to buy it, what to do with it

Facebook Inc.-owned Oculus VR has finally released its Touch motion controllers for the Oculus Rift.

Despite its release date being pushed out by several months, Facebook announced at its third annual Oculus Connect Conference in October that pre-orders of Oculus Touch would start on Oct. 10, with Dec. 6 marked as the date the controllers would finally hit the market.

Oculus Touch, which was announced last year, is a pair of tracked controllers that provide an immersive virtual reality experience with the impression that your virtual and physical hands are the same. Oculus Touch works with the Oculus Rift VR headset.

Here’s a look at how you can get your hands on the Oculus Touch, plus the various VR titles that have been launched with it. We also take a look at Oculus Avatars and Nvidia Corp.’s VR Funhouse that is now compatible with Oculus Touch.

Price and availability

If you didn’t pre-order your Oculus Touch, you can order it from the online Oculus store for $199. Estimated shipping is between Dec. 16 and 21, just in time for the festive season.

Oculus Touch is also available for purchase in stores with the ability to demo the hand controllers in more than 500 retailers in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany and the U.K. You can schedule your demo on the Oculus Live site.

Games available with Oculus Touch

With the launch of Oculus Touch, the company has released 54 made-for-VR titles that will be available from day one.

Everyone who buys an Oculus Touch, during the launch period, will receive the following four games for free:

  • First Contact: offers a brief introduction to the Touch controllers that features a small floating robot.
  • Dead and Buried: is a shooter game based in the Wild West that lets you enjoy target practice and competitive multiplayer modes.
  • Medium: lets you sculpt, paint, create and share 3D objects in a VR environment.
  • Quill: is a drawing and sketching program that lets you paint on a near-infinite canvas.

If you pre-ordered your Oculus Touch then you will also have access to VR Sports Challenge and The Unspoken. If you didn’t preorder then you will need to pay $30 for each game.

Toybox, which allows you to interact with various gadgets, play ping pong in zero gravity and light fireworks, is also available for free on the Oculus Store at Touch launch. If you have a friend with Touch controllers you can play together.

Check out the full list for the rest of the 54 Oculus Touch titles that are available now, including Ripcoil, Superhot VR and Dead Hungry.

Titles to expect in the Oculus Store in 2017 includes Robo Recall, Lone Echo, Arktika 1 and Giant Cop: Justice Above All.

Oculus Avatars

In addition to Oculus Touch, the company has also launched Oculus Avatars, allowing players to create a custom avatar. When creating their avatar, players have access to a wide assortment of faces, hairstyles, eyewear, clothing and texture effects.

The company has also released the Oculus Avatars software development kit with Touch so developers can integrate avatars into their VR experiences. VR titles, such as Sports Bar VR and Kingspray, will offer full support for Oculus Avatars at Touch launch.

Nvidia VR Funhouse

In addition to getting your hands on Oculus Touch, Nvidia has also announced that its VR Funhouse is now compatible with Oculus Touch and available in the Oculus Store. Nvidia VR Funhouse immerses players in a virtual carnival, offering a choice of nine mini-games like Clown Painter, Fire Archer, Whack-A-Mole, Balloon Knight, Mole Boxing, Shooting Gallery, Cannon Skeet, Wall Walker Toss and Hot Shot Basketball.

You can download Nvidia VR Funhouse for free from Steam or the Oculus Store. However, VR Funhouse does have some steep recommended system requirements, which includes an Intel i7 4790 processor or greater, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card and 8GB of memory. You will also need to download the Game Ready Driver from Nvidia, which has added support for Oculus Touch.
