Red Hat brings OpenShift Dedicated to Google’s cloud

Red Hat Inc. is stepping up its push to bring software containers and Kubernetes to the enterprise with the launch today of OpenShift Dedicated on the Google Cloud Platform.

OpenShift Dedicated is Red Hat’s specialized container management platform, which was first released as a standalone offering at the tail end of last year. It’s built on the same code base as the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and is designed to smooth the path for developers, allowing them to focus on app development and deployment, while Red Hat takes care of the administrative and operational management side, with support services thrown in for good measure.

The platform is now being offered as a managed service for enterprises using Google’s cloud. With the new service, Red Hat hopes to see an uptake in the adoption of containers, Kubernetes and cloud-native applications among Google Cloud Platform’s enterprise customers. Those that do embrace the platform will also be able to benefit from Google’s ecosystem of compute, data analytics, machine learning, network and storage services, the company said in its pitch.

“With OpenShift Dedicated, OpenShift serves as the abstraction layer that works across multiple clouds,” said Ashesh Badani, vice president and general manager of OpenShift at Red Hat. “By expanding OpenShift Dedicated to now include Google Cloud Platform, our customers’ apps that run on OpenShift Dedicated can also take advantage of Google Cloud Services, furthering our vision for a truly portable platform across the multiple cloud and infrastructure platforms.”

To add to the appeal, Red Hat cited a recent study by International Data Corp. on the business value of OpenShift. IDC found that the platform allows customers to respond to more quickly to changing market requirements as it allows them to deliver business-critical, microservices-based apps faster using DevOps processes. The study highlighted 66 percent faster app delivery times, and a 531 percent average ROI over five years as key benefits of the platform.

The company said that OpenShift Dedicated is available on the Google Cloud Platform immediately for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform subscribers.
