Will VMware’s Workspace ONE spark mobile innovation’s Act II? | #theCUBE

The consensus is that cloud still loses to on-prem as far as maximum security goes; as important as security is to an organization, no one is citing this as a reason to halt migration to cloud. Now that the world has reached the point of no return with cloud or hybrid IT, the market for improved cloud security is opening up. This is particularly true in the sphere of mobile apps where security can get even chancier, according to Sumit Dhawan, senior VP and GM at VMware Inc.

Dhawan spoke to John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, about how VMware is working to secure the cloud for enterprise mobile apps and devices. He also gave an update on the company’s AirWatch acquisition. The conversation was conducted onsite at the VMware campus in Palo Alto, CA, this week as part of an editorial series of interviews intended to find out what’s coming next for the virtualization products maker.

“AirWatch is the platform that enables us to build what we call the digital workspace, which is sort of where people access all of their applications for mobile devices,” he said, adding that AirWatch is the common core of its Workspace ONE platform.

Shadow IT

Dhawan spoke about “shadow IT” — ungoverned IT created by end users using applications, which ultimately leaves the organization more vulnerable to breach. “So it’s a fundamental end-user computing problem,” he said, adding that the freewheeling multi-cloud world is exacerbating it.

“[Users] can go to any kind of cloud, sign on an application and get onto their device within a matter of seconds,” he said. This leads to a “lowest-common-denominator” situation” where “the least possible security of any specific application will drive the security flow in the entire system,” he said.

Act II, Scene I

Dhawn believes that 2017 will be Act II for mobile innovation; whereas Act I was about transitioning to smartphones, he said, “Act II is all about enabling people to be able to access the information and applications from any device in a secure fashion.”

He also added that VMware, through AirWatch and Workspace ONE, aims to catalyze this second act.
