Gaming laptops and monitors launched at CES: Predator 21 X, Inspiron 7000, curved monitors, more

With augmented and virtual reality set to dominate at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, there is a string of companies who have launched new laptops and monitors for gaming enthusiasts.

Here’s a look at the latest offerings at CES 2017:

Gaming laptops

Lenovo launches Legion gaming brand – plus two new laptops

At CES 2017, Lenovo Group Ltd. launched a new gaming sub-brand called Legion. As part of the new brand, the company introduced two new bargain gaming laptops, the Legion Y720 and Y520 laptops.

Both of the gaming laptops feature a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia Corp.’s 10-series graphics cards, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and either a 512GB SSD or a 2TB hard drive.

The Legion Y720 (pictured above) includes a 6GB GTX 1060, which makes it possible to use a VR headset with the laptop. It also has the option to include a 4K screen, has a built-in Xbox One wireless controller receiver and a keyboard with RGB backlighting.

The Y520 starts at $900 while the higher-specced Y720 starts at $1,400.

Dell refreshes Alienware lineup and launches new Inspiron 7000 gaming laptops

In addition to unveiling a 2-in-1 version of its XPS 13 laptop at CES, Dell Inc. has also launched a new gaming-focused model for its Inspiron line of laptops.

The new Inspiron 7000 laptops, which come in a 14 or 15-inch variant, includes Nvidia’s newly launched GeForce GTX 1050 line of graphics cards. The top-end model has the option of a 4K screen while there is a choice between Intel’s 7th-generation i5-7300HQ or i7-7700HQ quad-core processors.

The Inspiron 7000 laptops have up to 32GB of RAM. The base model comes with a 500GB 5400RPM hard drive, but both models can be upgraded to an SSD.  

Dell has also refreshed its Alienware lineup of laptops with the addition of Intel’s 7th-generation Core processors.

Both the refreshed Alienware models and the new Inspiron 7000 laptops will be available from Jan. 5, with prices starting at $799.  

Acer launches expensive Predator 21 X gaming laptop

Acer Inc. has launched its Predator 21 X gaming laptop, with curved screen and integrated eye-tracking technology. The Predator 21 X has a 21-inch screen with 21:9 aspect ratio and 2,560 x 1,080-pixel resolution.

It packs a 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, five cooling fans and dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs. The Predator 21 X’s touchpad can also be flipped over to be used as a numeric keypad. It includes 64GB of memory, up to four 512GB solid-state drives and a 7200 RPM hard drive of 1TB capacity.

In addition to weighing a hefty 17 pounds, the Predator 21 X gaming laptop costs an astounding $8,999. The Predator 21 X will be available to buy in the U.S. from February.

Gaming monitors

HP’s curved gaming monitor

HP Inc.’s Omen X 35 is a 35-inch curved gaming monitor with 3440 x 1440 resolution, a 100Hz refresh rate and a 4ms response time. The monitor has a Micro-Edge display and will support Nvidia’s G-Sync technology.  

If you are an avid gamer you can pre-order the monitor from HP’s site starting Mar. 12. The monitor comes with a hefty price tag of $1,299.

Samsung launches curved quantum dot monitor for gamers

At CES 2017, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has unveiled its CH711 quantum dot curved monitor, designed for gamers. Available in 27 and 31.5-inch models, the monitor can be tilted both horizontally and vertically. It has a nearly 125 percent sRGB color coverage and 2,560 x 1,440 WQHD resolution.

The CH711 was showcased alongside Samsung’s CFG70 and CF791 quantum dot curved monitors that went on sale in December. The CH711 will go on sale in early 2017.

Acer’s new curved, eye-tracking monitor

Acer has also launched the ultra-wide Predator Z301CT gaming monitor, with a 30-inch display and built-in eye-tracking technology like the Predator 21 X above. The Z301CT relies on Tobii AB’s eye tracking technology and will work with games like Deus Ex, Watch Dogs 2, Elite: Dangerous and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate.  

The Z301CT’s curved screen offers 2,560 x 1,080-pixel resolution and a 200Hz refresh rate. It has horizontal and vertical viewing angles of 178 degrees and a response time of 4ms.

The Predator Z301CT gaming monitor will retail for $900 and will be available in February.

Asus VivoPC X, a compact gaming system

AsusTek Computer Inc. has unveiled the VivoPC X, a compact gaming system with a seventh-generation Core-i5 CPU, 8GB of DDR4 memory and a GTX 1060 graphics card. Storage options include up to 2TB of HDD storage and 512GB M.2 SSD. All this power is packed into an average-sized gaming console.

In addition to traditional 2D gaming, the company also says the VivoPC X will work with VR. The Asus VivoPC X will be available in March, starting at $800.
