Watch live: exploring the big data landscape at the DataWorks E.U. Summit 2017

Expanding its Hadoop Summit across international waters, the DataWorks E.U. Summit 2017, presented by Hortonworks Inc. and Yahoo Inc., starts today in Munich, Germany.

Once described as the revolutionary technology behind big data, Hadoop now faces other innovations in data management. “Artificial intelligence will eclipse Hadoop,” according to a recent report by Forrester Research, which is anticipating a shift from the Hadoop revolution to the AI revolution.

Apache Spark is set to dominate the big data landscape by 2022, according to research by Wikibon, (owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE). The technology supports increasingly sophisticated ways for enterprises to leverage big data compared to traditional Hadoop technology, according to the report.

The two-day DataWorks Summit will showcase how data is transforming business and how open-source technologies enable users to leverage all their data. SiliconANGLE will be at the DataWorks Summit with exclusive interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE.

The big data market is incredibly competitive, with companies like MapR Technologies Inc., Amazon Web Services, Oracle Corp., IBM Corp. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. all trying to get a piece of the pie. A key player in the market, Cloudera Inc. announced its submission of paperwork last week for its initial public offering, hoping to raise $200 million.

The scaling up of open-source software has proved difficult for companies due to it being new and the stiff competition. Despite reporting better-than-expected earnings for the second quarter in a row, Hortonworks continues to face losses.

Hortonworks and Microsoft Corp. announced a partnership last month that will look toward the future of the cloud. The goal of the collaboration is to bring Hadoop and Apache Spark to the enterprise through Azure HDInsight. While Hortonworks has remained relatively quiet on its cloud strategy, Scott Gnau, chief technical officer of Hortonworks, said during his interview on theCUBE at BigData SV that we can expect announcements at the company’s DataWorks Summit this week.

In addition to various Hortonworks executives, guest speakers at the DataWorks Summit 2017 include Terri Virnig, vice president of offering management for power software solutions at IBM; Dr. Barry Devlin, founder and principal at 9sight Consulting; Ross Porter, director of systems engineering at Dell Technologies Inc. and EMC Corp.; and Carlo Vaiti, chief technologist and strategist for Europe, the Middle East and Africa for HPE.

Other guests include, Dr. Rand Hindi, founder and chief executive officer of Snips SAS; and Nadeem Gulzar, head of advanced analytics and architecture at Danske Bank A/S.
