EMERGING TECH

Ahead of Computex, Acer announces budget gaming laptop, quantum dot tablet and more

Getting in ahead of Computex next week in Taipei, Taiwan, Acer Inc. has announced new gaming laptops, tablets and convertible laptops.

More details about Acer’s latest releases are expected at the tech show, which the company will be attending. Acer’s latest announcement comes less than a month after the company announced a range of hardware at its annual global press conference in New York. During that announcement the company unveiled the Holo 360-degree video camera, new 2-in-1’s the Switch 3 and 5, Swift 1 and 3 notebooks, various gaming laptops, monitors and an all-in-one desktop.

Here’s a look at Acer’s latest hardware, including the Nitro 5, a budget gaming laptop; Spin 1, a 2-in-1 laptop; and the Iconia Tab 10 with quantum dot display:

Nitro 5

Acer has announced the Nitro 5 (pictured above), an affordable gaming laptop for the growing number of casual gamers out there. The Nitro 5 has a 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with sound provided by Dolby Audio Premium and Acer TrueHarmony.

Gamers can choose between a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card paired with a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 or i5 processor or an AMD Radeon RX550 graphics card paired with a 7th-generation AMD A-Series FX, A12 or A10 processor.

Both models support up to 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, up to a 512GB SSD paired with an optional HDD drive up to 2TB and Windows 10. When it comes to ports, the Nitro 5 has a USB-C port, one USB 3.0, two USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port.

The black laptop with red hinge and red-backlit keyboard features dual fans with Acer Coolboost technology, which will allow gamers to manually control the revolutions per minute speed of the laptop’s fans.

The Nitro 5 is set to ship in July with a starting price of $800.

Acer also announced the latest version of its portable 2-in-1 laptop, the Spin 1. The 11.6-inch laptop has a full HD (1,920 x 1,080) touchscreen with a choice of Intel Pentium or Celeron processors. It comes with 4GB of RAM and a choice between 32, 64 and 128GB of eMMC solid-state storage.

The all metal Windows 10 device weighs 2.76 pounds and is just 0.55 inches thick. When it comes to ports, the Spin 1 has a USB 3.1 port, one USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port and a microSDXC card slot. Acer is promising a battery life of up to eight hours.

The Spin 1 will support Windows Ink through Acer’s Active Stylus, which can be bought separately. While the Precision Touchpad also supports Windows 10 gestures.

The Spin 1 will ship in July with a starting price of $329.

Finally, Acer also announced a pair of 10-inch, Android 7.0 Nougat tablets with the Iconia Tab 10, focusing more predominantly on media while the Iconia One 10 is more focused on connectivity.

Both tablets are powered by a quad-core MediaTek processor with a wide-angle IPS display, DTS-HD rated speakers and a claimed eight-hour battery life.

The Iconia Tab 10 is the first tablet on the market that includes a quantum dot display to provide enhanced color depth and accuracy, as well as a four speaker setup with a built-in subwoofer.

The Iconia One 10 doesn’t have the screen and sound specifications of the Iconia Tab 10, but it does have two micro-USB ports so you can charge the tablet while connected to an external device, like a mouse or storage.

Both tablets also feature some Acer smart tools:

  • EZ WakeUp will wake up the tablet and load a pre-selected app of choice based on a gesture from the user.
  • EZ Snap makes taking screenshots easier by using a three-finger pinch.
  • EZ Mode will restrict access to specific apps and data when sharing the tablet with family, friends or children.
  • Memory Cleaner will manage the tablet’s memory, storage and apps to optimize system functionality.

Acer has yet to announce pricing and availability of the tablets.
