Dell EMC explains hyper-converged infrastructure and hybrid cloud focus

The advent of cloud technology has done more than simply give companies a new tech tool to play with. Everything relating to information technology is being fundamentally transformed into a new way of doing business, from IT itself, to security, to the workforce.

Dell EMC’s customers are realizing that, and hoping the company can help them transform and enter this new era in the best way possible, according to Bob Wambach, vice president of marketing, Converged Platforms and Solutions Division, at Dell EMC.

“I think there’s a realization from almost all customers now that the old way of doing IT, where you select your server, you select your storage, networking, and you put it together yourself. They spend most of their time trying to keep those things up and running,” Wambach said. “I think people see with public cloud, that’s helped this along great. With public cloud, you are paying a fee and you have access to IT that is pretty much just there.”

Wambach spoke with host John Walls (@JohnWalls21), and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live-streaming studio, during Dell EMC World in Las Vegas, Nevada. (* Disclosure below.)

Wambach spoke about the transformative effect cloud technology is having on the IT industry and how Dell EMC is helping customers understand and take advantage of it and start thinking in terms of hyper-converged infrastructure and hybrid cloud.

Making sense of hybrid cloud

As useful as public cloud is, many companies who have used and are familiar with it have begun to realize that there are many IT needs that are simply more cost effective if they are run on an on-premise cloud, Wambach stated. Dell EMC has emphasized helping these customers change their old IT mindset and put into place an efficient, hybrid cloud network on converged and hyper-converged infrastructure.

“It’s not the speeds-and-fees focus; it’s really how do you transform yourself so that you get out of this siloed environment and starting thinking more in terms of converged and hyper-converged infrastructure and then developing hybrid cloud platforms on top of that,” Wambach said.

Although many customers do realize the IT industry is entering a new era, some may have trouble understanding exactly how to extract the value from these new technologies and how their businesses can benefit, Wambach stated. He believes the key to helping them understand is by connecting what is happening in the data center to the day-to-day operations and goals of the business itself.

“Really what we’ve seen with converged platforms and solutions divisions is by offering customers pre-engineered, turnkey systems that are fully engineered, where the burden of the life cycle assurance is really … taken out of their hands. There’s a prescriptive way that these things can managed, supported and sustained as a single system,” Wambach said. “And that really frees customers up to focus on business priorities.”
