Following the divestment and splitting up of so much of its software services, does Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. have the resources to bring together the best of its hardware offerings?
Looking to answer this question and others, SiliconANGLE is at HPE Discover 2017, taking place in Las Vegas, with exclusive commentary and interviews from the mobile studio theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)
Despite its dismal second-quarter results released last week, HPE executives remain optimistic. HPE saw its server revenue drop 14 percent, storage sales fall 13 percent and networking revenue plunge 30 percent. However, HPE said it’s growing where it needs to grow, such as in all-flash storage business, which was up 33 percent, and in its Aruba wireless business, up 27 percent.
HPE’s main emphasis now is on infrastructure and what it calls hybrid information technology. The company’s recent acquisition of flash storage maker Nimble Storage Inc. for $1 billion fits squarely within HPE’s hybrid IT offerings. Another acquisition that helps HPE’s strategy of “making hybrid IT simple” took place in January when the company acquired hyper-converged system startup SimpliVity Corp. for $650 million. At Discover, the CUBE will explore the integration of these recent acquisitions.
“HPE needs to jettison software, focus research and development more narrowly, make more acquisitions atop of its buy of SimpliVity and Nimble — doing tuck-in acquisitions that, in my opinion, aren’t going to be game changers but underscore the gaps,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief research officer of the analyst group Wikibon, owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE.
HPE announced last year that it would sell most of its software business to U.K.-based Micro Focus International plc for $8.8 billion, a deal on schedule to close Sept. 1.
HPE Discover could also unveil additional details about “The Machine,” the world’s largest single-memory computer, which HPE is currently working on. Last month, the company said “The Machine” was closer to reality, announcing a new prototype with 160 terabytes of directly addressable main memory. Memory-first data center architecture is both faster and uses less energy. HPE’s first target markets are smart cities, autonomous vehicles and intelligent power grids.
