HPE aims to change the security game with Gen10 servers

During this week’s HPE Discover event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. revealed its goal to improve hardware security technology for the enterprise. To do so, the company has unveiled its Gen10 servers, aimed at bringing expanded functionality and capabilities across the board.

“This is where we have been able to leverage some unique opportunities, like the fact that we build our own silicon to put a silicon root of trust, an immutable fingerprint, right into our silicon that can never be changed,” said Susan Blocher, global vice president of marketing, Data Center Infrastructure Group, at HPE.

Blocher spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, during HPE Discover in Las Vegas, Nevada, to discuss Gen10.

An overlooked security vulnerability

While cyber-security technology has advanced at a breakneck pace, one area that has remained relatively stagnant is server hardware, according to Blocher.

“I’m quoting someone else when I say that ‘firmware is a cesspool of Trojan-horse opportunity for cyber attackers,” recalled Blocher. “With all of the investment that companies have made in data security, network security and application security, no one was focusing on the servers.”

In addition to changing the game with new sever security technology, HPE is continuing to innovate through partnerships, such as the one with Intel’s Turbo Boost Mode, which accelerates processor and graphics performance for peak loads, Blocher explained.

“A lot of applications can’t take advantage of TurboBoost Mode, because when you hit that high frequency, that creates a little jitter, which creates latency,” Blocher said.

This latency has historically prevented some key applications, such as high-frequency trading or video streaming, from using Turbo Boost. HPE solved this issue by partnering with Intel on a solution that dampens the jitter.

“For the first time these applications have been able to take advantage of Turbo Boost,” Blocher stated.
