Watch live from AWS Public Sector Summit 2017

As Amazon continues to infiltrate the enterprise with commercial web services, can it translate private sector success for the public sector as a market growth opportunity?

Looking to answer this question and others, SiliconANGLE is at AWS Public Sector Summit, taking place in Washington D.C., with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.) The three-day event brings together government, education and nonprofit technology leaders to discuss cloud computing innovations that are changing some of today’s most regulated organizations.

Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud platform is expected to grow to $43 billion by 2022, according to Wikibon Research (Wikibon is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE). During its first-quarter earnings, cloud services once again helped boost Amazon’s earnings, with Amazon Web Services cloud revenue jumping 43 percent from last year to $3.7 billion. AWS, however, is facing strong competition from Microsoft Corp. with its Azure cloud offering, which surged 94 percent in its third-fiscal-quarter earnings report.

When it comes to the public sector, AWS serves more than 2,300 government, 7,000 education and 22,000 nonprofit organizations worldwide. AWS boasts large clients like the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice and the Central Intelligence Agency, which awarded a $600 million contract to AWS back in 2013.

Many in the public sector are adopting cloud technology, including financial institutions that have seen a sudden move to the cloud, and are looking at companies that have approval from the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program. AWS, together with competitors Microsoft Azure and lesser-known CSRA, received FedRAMP approval a year ago, allowing AWS GovCloud, Azure GovCloud and CSRA’s ARC-P IaaS to provide services under the FedRAMP high standards for cloud computing services.

Some of the fastest-growing trends in the public sector’s use of technology are linked to the Internet of Things, with many AWS public sectors, such as justice, transportation and health, finding value in AWS IoT solutions. Agencies at all levels have extensive data coming in from wearable body cameras, various drones, video cameras, sensors on light poles and transportation vehicles, noted Teresa Carlson, vice president of the worldwide public sector at AWS, during an interview on theCUBE at the AWS re:Invent conference. “By 2020 they think there are 30 billion data points coming in from IoT devices. If you think about that, a lot of that is coming out of the public sector,” said Carlson.

Keynote speakers at AWS Public Sector Summit include Werner Vogels, chief technology officer at Amazon; Teresa Carlson; John Edwards, chief information officer at the Central Intelligence Agency; Craig Fox, assistant commissioner of the Australian Taxation Office; and Jeffrey Armstrong, president of the California Polytechnic State University.

Other guest speakers include Melinda Rogers, chief information security officer at the United States Department of Justice; Dr. William Ballhaus, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Blackboard Inc.; Andreas Merkl, president of Ocean Conservancy; and Tom Read, chief digital and information officer Ministry of Justice U.K.
