HPE updates backup and recovery suite for better protection against ransomware

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. today released an updated version of its Adaptive Backup Recovery Suite aimed at helping organizations get to grips with new security threats such as ransomware as well as the explosive growth in data they accumulate.

The company said in its pitch that organizations are under increasing pressure to provide more secure backup and faster recovery in order to reduce downtime and risk. It cites a recent study by International Data Corp. that highlights the crippling costs of outages. According to IDC, the average total cost of unplanned application downtime falls between $1.25 billion to $2.5 billion per year, while the average cost of infrastructure failure per hour is $100,000.

In order to protect against this unplanned downtime, companies need enhanced solutions that allow them to manage storage capacity and automatically build-in disaster recovery, HPE said. That’s where its new Adaptive Backup Recovery Suite comes in, with new features such as enhanced “always-on” security capabilities, automation and a more intuitive user interface that should help provide enterprises with the kind of security they require.

The HPE Adaptive Backup and Recovery suite bundles software including HPE Data Protector 10.0, HPE Backup Navigator 9.6 and Storage Optimizer 5.5.

HPE Data Protector is software used to centralize and standardize an organization’s backup and recovery management operations. New features in this release include centralized communication and simplified configuration through port consolidation intended to help ensure all users are authenticated. There’s also a new web-based user interface and dashboard that the company said provides a “high-level” view of users’ backup and recovery environments.

“The Data Protector 10 release has many enhancements we are excited about, but the most anticipated new feature for us, is the Secure Communications,” said Ken Pawlowski, lead architect at Proctor & Gamble Co., a customer using HPE’s new suite. “The many security enhancements combined with reduced port usage and simplified communications will allow us to create an even more reliable and secure backup environment, with lower overhead.”

As for HPE Storage Optimizer, this combines file analytics with policy-based storage tiering, information optimization and backup to reduce customer’s storage footprint. The new update offers more extensibility into third-party platforms like Windows Server and NetApp, plus improved security and reporting features that enable more efficient assignment of permissions, the company said.

Lastly, HPE Backup Navigator has been updated with built-in intelligence tools that are able to provide more detailed descriptions of data and application-related problems and suggest fixes to them.

“The new innovations around the HPE Adaptive Backup and Recovery Suite enable IT staff to mitigate operational concerns, while providing streamlined processes, automation, and secure communications to better manage today’s digital environments,’ said Stephen Spellicy, vice president, product management, information management & governance at HPE Software.

HPE said its Adaptive Backup and Recovery suite is available immediately, with pricing based on a traditional a-la-carte model or the amount of data managed.
