Virtualization built on modern data backup solutions are enabling agility and flexibility in the information technology environment. As assets and data need to be quickly moved based on business needs, a robust backup solution is key to enabling these transitions.
“The construction industry is not known for over-investing in IT. If you look at Gartner’s reports, the construction industry is typically around one percent of the revenue, and that’s where Granite is,” said Vladimir Taft, principal infrastructure architect at Granite Construction Inc. “When the new team took over as part of an organization change, we inherited a lot of technical debt, plus an expiring lease on our data center. It was being closed down by a major vendor, and we had to move it very quickly.”
Taft spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during this year’s VeeamOn event in New Orleans, Louisiana. Taft described how Veeam Software Inc. facilitated his team’s data backup re-organization. (* Disclosure below.)
As part of the IT transition to virtualization within Granite, Veeam enabled a quick solution for moving across data centers and computing solutions.
“Veeam helped us enable [virtual machine-level] backups, because we had to virtualize very quickly and then move from the old data center to the new data center. Veeam was there to secure the baseline for the new data center backup,” Taft explained.
The key for Granite was Veeam’s native support for Microsoft, which Granite runs throughout its field computing environment.
“With Hyper-V, Veeam was there right on time with support for a pure Microsoft environment. That’s what enabled us to secure the … field, which previously didn’t have backup standards or governance, and the backups were disjointed,” Taft concluded.
