As companies modernize their computing infrastructure, often times this involves a complete overhaul of their data recovery solution. This scenario was the case for Study Group Pty. Ltd., which prepares international students for university degree program and teaches high school education and English language courses. The company’s global footprint tied in with educational data privacy requirements drove them to upgrade their technology stack.

“We virtualized quite early on in the grand scheme of things. We went to VMware very quickly, and we’re now running Hypervisor with a vSphere 5.5 environment,” said Andrew Christensen, senior systems engineer, global data centers, at Study Group Pty. Ltd. “That was all well and good, but I don’t think the practices that we took up or infrastructure alongside that kept up, and backups was one of those things,”

Backup solutions in action

The Study Group has already benefited from its Veeam-powered backup solution and has a renewed sense of confidence in their data security as a result, according to Christensen.

“We’ve both tested and actually had incidents where we’ve had malware come into the business in certain aspects, and having a good recovery on site with a quick, easy interface was very useful. … After you go through the hoops and you understand what you’re doing with the product, it really does give you a sense of security,” Christensen said.

In addition to providing peace of mind in the event of a data-recovery scenario, Veeam’s data analytics solution can also enable some preventative measures by detecting anomalous behavior of data.

“Antivirus and security software is out there that can do this for you, and also the data analytics tools that are out there at the moment. Veeam One is actually a useful tool on that front,” Christensen explained.
