Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. is currently in a transitional phase for both its storage portfolio and its chief executive officer role. Looking to explore these shifts, SiliconANGLE is at HPE Discover, currently underway in Madrid, Spain, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)
HPE Discover EU will be the last conference with CEO Meg Whitman at the helm after the announcement last week that Antonio Neri, president of HPE, will replace her on Feb. 1, an announcement that overshadowed the company’s mixed fourth-quarter results. Wikibon Chief Analyst David Vellante says the biggest question for HPE under Neri will be, “how do they compete as essentially a reseller of other companies’ technologies?”
HPE’s acquisition of Nimble Storage Inc. earlier this year is already paying off for the company. Despite only a 5 percent growth in storage revenue to $871 million, HPE did see Nimble revenue increase by 80 percent. The disappointing overall storage growth was due to weak performance in the company’s mainstream 3Par storage line in the U.S.
HPE has been neck and neck with Dell Technologies Inc. but managed to inch ahead in the total enterprise storage systems market for the second quarter, according to International Data Corp. The overall market was only up slightly by 2.9 percent, but HPE managed to capture 20.1 percent of the market, with Dell in the second position with 18.4 percent. While HPE and Dell continue to dominate the two top spots, NetApp Inc., in the third position, has enjoyed its fifth straight quarter of revenue growth. NetApp’s revenue was up 16.7 percent year over year, but unfortunately, its overall market share was down to 6.4 percent.
HPE Discover in Madrid will also likely focus on the company’s recent endeavors in the artificial intelligence market. HPE entered the AI market last month with the announcement of new services and platforms that will enable companies to more easily adopt AI technologies, specifically focused on deep learning. While the AI engine that the company unveiled last week will harness the power of AI to prevent data center outages.
Keynote and guest speakers at HPE Discover include various HPE executives, including Whitman; Neri; Alain Andreoli, senior vice president and general manager of hybrid IT group; Ana Pinczuk, senior vice president and general manager of HPE Pointnext; Irv Rothman, president and chief executive officer of HPE financial services; and Martina Trucco, senior manager of innovation and brand integration.
Other guest speakers include Peter McKay, president and chief operating officer at Veeam Software Inc.; Matt Cadieux, chief information officer at Red Bull Racing Ltd.; Christian Renaud, research director for internet of things at 451 Research LLC; and Kate Swanborg, senior vice president of technology communications and strategic alliances at DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.
