Explore the Kubernetes hype train at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2017
Why have all the major technology players jumped on the Kubernetes wagon this year, and where will the open-source container management system go from here?
Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2017, currently underway in Austin, Texas, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)
At KubeCon + CloudNativeCon, theCUBE will explore what’s driving the interest in Kubernetes this year, alongside the supporting initiatives from major tech players, including Google LLC, Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Kubernetes has matured to a certain point, what Stu Miniman (@stu), an analyst with Wikibon (owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE) refers to as the 1.0 ecosystem.
Kubernetes’ momentum has seen it become the de facto standard for container orchestration with backing from most of the major cloud players. The application container market is expected to see significant growth over the next few years and will quadruple in size from $762 million in 2016 to $2.7 billion by 2020, according to 451 Research LLC.
After joining the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in August, Amazon Web Services Inc. finally announced support for Kubernetes at its re:Invent conference last week, joining the likes of Google and Microsoft Corp., which both offer support for the container orchestration software. AWS previously pushed its own container orchestration tools but has finally conceded to the popularity of Kubernetes.
“Go to Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, AWS — they’re not going to build a business off Kubernetes. It’s a service that helps enable their infrastructure as a service,” Miniman said. “There are a lot of small companies that do Kubernetes services and management, but Kubernetes is not like Linux’s open-source operating system, where an enterprise would choose the best product and service provider. The 30-plus companies doing Kubernetes services are all interoperable.”
Google teamed up with the CNCF last month and introduced the Certified Kubernetes Conformance Program, which will allow for Kubernetes interoperability between different implementations. Most of the big names in the container ecosystem have already certified their offerings, including Google, Docker Inc., IBM Corp. and Red Hat Inc. While the CNCF announced its first certified Kubernetes providers in September.
Keynote speakers at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2017 include Google executives Sarah Novotny, who leads an open-source strategy group for Google Cloud Platform; Brian Grant, co-technical lead of Kubernetes and Container Engine; Chen Goldberg, director of engineering for Container Engine and Kubernetes; and Kelsey Hightower, staff developer advocate for Google Cloud Platform.
