Will automation replace monitoring in cloud computing’s future?

The complexities of a continuously expanding digital revolution creates challenges for businesses both in multicloud environment management and assurance of deployment delivery. Through this evolving transformation, many enterprises need guidance in determining priorities and shaping virtualization strategies.

“How do we deal with an environment that’s now not just three public clouds and some hybrid clouds, but a growing list of specialty clouds? … What Pensa is trying to do is be a part of solving that problem using intelligent automation technology, especially in managing the underlay complexity, the infrastructure layer,” said Tom Joyce (pictured), chief executive officer of Pensa Inc.

By simplifying processes around designing and deploying virtual infrastructure, Pensa is working to make adoption of software-defined virtual infrastructure technologies faster and easier for customers.

Joyce spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon event in Austin, Texas. They discussed the evolution of cloud computing and Pensa’s role in supporting customers through its future growth. (* Disclosure below.)

Enabling innovation through automation

Through his work, Joyce has discovered patterns in enterprise knowledge gaps around cross cloud and designing for multiple environments with a range of capabilities. “What folks are asking for is a layer of technology that arbitrates between the underlying infrastructure and the upper-level applications that they’re actually trying to deliver, and that’s where this automation layer … comes in,” Joyce said.

Pensa works primarily to automate systems for integrating technologies in software-defined data centers and support large-scale providers dealing with onboarding Virtual Network Functions. “We have a revolutionary way to onboard those VNFs, validate designs, deliver designs, and do it in a way that integrates with all of the open-source technologies people are using,” Joyce said.

The cloud-based service provides a simplified process for developing infrastructure and ensuring streamlined production. “The role of the architect in a cloud-native environment … is more important than ever. Somebody needs to know how the tools work to make sure that the service levels actually deliver. … We want to provide intelligent technology that helps them do that,” he said.

As Pensa works to help companies adapt, Joyce is looking ahead at the next wave of change that will dictate what his company provides to its customers. “Automation technologies are going to replace classic monitoring. … Ultimately, there is a lot of complexity, and the machine needs to manage it,” he said.

For Joyce, the opportunity to continue innovating is what keeps him at the front of each wave of digital evolution. “I really like the opportunity to engage with the leading edge of technology. … It forces you to learn,” he concluded.
