Elon Musk’s flamethrower sales are blazing, worrying some and puzzling everyone else

Elon Musk’s Boring Co. reportedly has sold 10,000 flamethrowers at $500 a pop, hauling in $5 million in the first 24 hours that the weapons were on offer.

The high-tech fire-spitting machines were announced on Sunday via Twitter. At that time, Musk wrote, “Guaranteed to liven up any party! World’s safest flamethrower!” He added that they might best work against “hordes of undead in a zombie apocalypse.”

This has led some people to believe that Musk is playing some kind of prank, but that hasn’t done anything to dampen the public’s interest in buying the things. Musk did say on Twitter in December that flamethrowers would be coming soon, but back then most people thought he was joking.

The flamethrowers are supposed to ship this spring, but there is no guarantee. California Assemblyman Miguel Santiago said that at least in California, the public will not be getting their zombie killing machines in the mail.

In a statement published on Twitter, Santiago said that although he complemented Musk for his “genius” and the fact his companies are working for the common good, he now felt disappointed. “I cannot even begin to imagine the problems a flamethrower would cause,” wrote Santiago, saying that he would create legislation to prohibit their sale to the public. “With great power comes great responsibility.”

He acknowledged that this could be a prank – given April will be shipping time – but added that Boring had also stated that the weapons were definitely no prank.

Flamethrowers are not illegal in the U.S. if they meet the standards set by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. As people have pointed out on Twitter, you can buy one today in Home Depot, only one that doesn’t emit a flame further than 10 feet.

In a statement, Boring said its flamethrower “is safer than what you can buy right now off-the-shelf at Home Depot to destroy weeds.” There are 10,000 more of the weapons up for sale, and it seems they won’t last too long.
