BrowserStack reels in $50M from Accel to help debug the web

BrowserStack Inc. helps thousands of companies including Microsoft Corp. and Twitter Inc. ensure that their websites work well on different devices. Today, the startup announced that it has raised $50 million from Accel to bring its technology to yet more parts of the internet.

BrowserStack offers a cloud platform that gives developers access to preconfigured devices for testing web projects. The service removes the need for a company to assemble and maintain an in-house collection of test devices, which can be a tricky endeavor thanks to the large variety of handsets on the market. There’s also the fact that major hardware makers refresh their lineups every year.

According to BrowserStack, its platform offers more than 2,000 mobile device and desktop configurations. The startup says that each endpoint comes preinstalled with common apps such as Acrobat Reader to let developers quickly start their projects.

The testing itself, in turn, can be carried out in a number of ways. Developers may manually examine how a site behaves on a certain device, or use open-source automation frameworks such as Selenium to run tests across multiple different endpoints at once. BrowserStack also has several built-in automation features for checking core features such as if a web page properly resizes itself for different screen sizes.

The startup, which was founded in Mumbai, has managed to become one of the biggest names in web testing segment despite being bootstrapped for its first six years. BrowserStack also claims to be profitable.

The new funding from Accel should make it easier for the startup to maintain its position amid the fierce competition from the industry’s other well-funded test providers. One of BrowserStack’s biggest rivals is Sauce Labs Inc., which in late 2016 secured a $70 million round led by Institutional Venture Partners.
