Mesosphere DC/OS adds hybrid and multicloud management features
Container software company Mesosphere Inc. is adding new hybrid and multicloud management capabilities in an update to its popular DC/OS platform.
DC/OS is a distributed operating system that’s used by developers to build and run data-intensive software container applications. Based on the open-source Apache Mesos project, DC/OS serves as a cluster manager and operating system that unites multiple data center resources and simplifies the deployment of workloads on containers, which allows applications to run unchanged in many computer environments.
Today’s update is focused on making it easier to run containers on multiple cloud infrastructures, helping to facilitate next-generation applications such as the “internet of things” and machine learning, Mesosphere officials said.
To that end, Mesosphere DC/OS 1.11 comes with a new unified control plane to help manage hybrid cloud operations. The company claims that DC/OS is unique in its ability to span multiple cloud environments, and says the new control pane makes it easier to deploy and schedule workloads across different clouds with just a couple of clicks.
The platform also features a new cloud bursting feature that allows users to scale applications across multiple clouds at once. The benefit of this is that users can better accommodate spikes in demand, and also optimize their infrastructure to keep a lid on spending.
Also new is the general availability of Kubernetes as a service on DC/OS, which means users can now install and scale up production-grade Kubernetes clusters with a single click, providing an easy way to manage and orchestrate their containers. Mesosphere first made this feature available in beta last year, saying it was doing so in order to cater to user demand. DC/OS also offers a second option for container orchestration, namely the open-source Marathon project that’s a central component of Apache Mesos. Marathon was once the only option, but with Kubernetes emerging as the de facto choice for the vast majority of container users, it makes sense for Mesosphere to embrace it now.
“DC/OS provides a platform to power data-driven applications, like those for connected cars, personalized experiences, and machine learning, all with the right infrastructure on your terms,” said Mesosphere’s cofounder and chief executive officer Florian Leibert.
Mesosphere said DC/OS 1.11 is available to download now from its website.
