Balancing act: Informatica straddles on-prem needs with cloud data at Informatica World 2018
Now that the data warehousing craze has converted to public cloud mania, how is data integrator Informatica LLC innovating its business model to survive the changing tides?
Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at Informatica World, currently underway in Las Vegas, Nevada. Watch live for exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE, from Monday, May 21, to Tuesday, May 22. (* Disclosure below.)
Founded during the era of expensive computing and local memory, Informatica did well as an on-premises software management platform for the enterprise. Yet the introduction of flash storage technology shifted computing architecture to prioritize the data, not the underlying infrastructure. With an integration platform as a service market expected to reach nearly $3 billion by 2021, swelling at a compound annual growth rate of 41.5 percent since 2016, Informatica is betting big on cloud, rapidly realigning its efforts to meet new customer demands.
One area where Informatica excels is in the gray areas of enterprise data management, where public cloud offerings don’t solve all of computing issues. Hardware still matters, according to Wikibon analyst Peter Burris. Companies still need on-prem solutions for security, legality and intellectual property constraints, leaving Informatica searching for the best way to leverage modern virtualized computing environments to serve customer needs.
“That’s been Informatica’s mission in recent years — get to the cloud with more specialized data management technologies for the data that would be unique to an organization. Cloud plus metadata equals Informatica,” Burris said.
Managing relationships with cloud infrastructure platforms like Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Azure and Dell EMC, alongside customer’s on-prem requirements is a balancing act for Informatica, particularly when it comes to cost and applications integration. An ongoing challenge for the Gartner Inc.’s magic quadrant leader is the pricing and servicing extended by these major cloud providers, which can follow different models from on-prem offerings.
A company like Informatica can demonstrate technological superiority for on-prem workload management, “but that superiority erodes if the industry doesn’t get a common class experience for both on-prem and cloud,” Burris said.
This challenge has driven Informatica’s direction, focusing now on the ability to manage high-quality, high-value metadata in a high-fidelity and cost-sensitive way, wherever data is stored. Burris deems this a “very smart strategy,” as it gives customers the opportunity to “create new analytics applications and integration for these applications.”
