Amazon adds new options and slashes the price of AWS Lightsail instances

Amazon Web Services Inc. is rolling out more cloud instance types, this time for its AWS Lightsail service.

AWS Lightsail is a private virtual server offering introduced in 2016, aimed at small businesses and developers that either cannot afford to pay for, or do not require, full public cloud or data center services.

Lightsail was a pretty basic offering when it first appeared, but it has gained more features over time with new capabilities, including block storage and support for Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system being added to it. On Thursday, Amazon said the time is right for some new instance options on Lightsail. The company is adding two new sizes and also slashing the prices of its existing offerings.

The new instance sizes, for both Linux and Windows, come in 16-gigabyte and 32GB formats. The 16GB version comes with four virtual computer processing units, 320GB of storage and 6 terabytes of data transfer. The 32GB instances boast eight vCPUs and 640GB of storage, plus 7 terabytes of data transfer.

Most of Lightsail’s existing Linux instances are getting a 50 percent cost reduction, though the price for the smallest 512-megabyte instance is being cut by only 30 percent, from $5 per month to $3.50 per month. Here’s a list of the new prices:

Lightsail’s Windows instances are also getting cheaper, though because of Microsoft’s licensing costs, they’re still more expensive than the latter. Windows instances on Lightsail now start at $8 per month for 512MB.

Each instance type comes with attached solid-state drive storage, a static IP address and Secure Shell access for operating network services securely over an unsecured network.
